Exciting conference (Basel, June 2024)

On two warm and wonderfully sunny days at the end of June 2024 (June 28-29), we were able to hold our conference on Spanish in Africa here at the Seminar of Ibero-Romance Studies at the University of Basel.

The sum of all contributions enabled us to take a current look at the challenges and opportunities of the Spanish language in Africa, while not forgetting the past and discussing the possible future. It was a unique opportunity to look at the different regions (Ceuta, Melilla, Morocco, Western Sahara, Equatorial Guinea) in their entirety and to identify both important similarities and differences.

Thanks to the broad interest shown by the audience and, above all, the very stimulating and wonderfully presented contributions, this conference was a great success. The informal atmosphere, the stimulating conversations during the coffee and lunch breaks, as well as the guided tour of the city and the dinner in the Löwenzorn restaurant also contributed to making the conference a wonderful memory.

Many thanks to all who contributed to this successful conference: speakers and discussants, invited guests, audience, team of the Seminar, organizing committee, as well as the institutions who supported the event: Swiss National Science Foundation, Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, Centre for African Studies, and Swiss Society of Spanish Studies.
